Frosted Flakes and Guerilla Marketing

To continue my theme with Cereal, I thought I may reflect on one occasion of guerilla cereal marketing.  Most of the time around Thanksgiving, tons of coupons get distributed. From the beginning of October through the end of November, food and beverage coupons are crazy.

One week when I went out to pick up the Sunday IndyStar, there was something a little extra in the plastic wrap. There was a small sample box of frosted flakes. I was highly confused at the time. Why would Kellogg’s send out a small box of frosted flakes?

My mom told me that they just wanted us to sample their product. I happily opened the box of frosted flakes to find it had gotten soggy in the snow. There was a major issue in the packaging, but that’s for another P.

This particular instance of guerrilla marketing was successful in my opinion, even though I never sampled the product. I can still remember the cereal that I received over 5 years ago. I would also like to say, I have never been sent any other cereals in the mail and I find this guerrilla tactic very original.

  1. Ew, wet cereal - that's gross. Fun story: one time my mom got the best of the cereal companies. She bought 300 boxes at one time; and with her expert couponing skills, she managed to get PAID a quarter for each one. It was really a steal - quite literally. That's all. Carry on.
